Use http://www.scholastic.com/bookwizard/ to find out if a book is on your child's reading level.
Below I have included comprehension strategy newsletters. These came from Jennifer Jones's site called www.helloliteracy.com . She is a wonderful source for literacy instruction.
“What is the use of a book, without pictures or conversations?”
Our first genre study is fantasy. Fantasy stories have a magical feeling. It allows readers to escape to a time and place away from their known reality. This is a favorite for many students. They will enjoy connecting with the quirky characters they encounter.
Our current genre study is a mystery unit. Students had the option of reading five different books. Students will have lots of opportunity to practice making inferences, which is our current focus during writer's workshop. As we begin making inferences and connections during reader's workshop I am beginning to see students continue to infer across the science and social studies content areas.
